COVID 19 ANNOUNCEMENT: Our classes and workshops are currently on hold due to the virus. Courses are currently being redesigned for moving into an online format. We anticipate that those will be launched no sooner than mid 2022. We welcome hearing from you about courses, workshops or special classes you might be interested in. If you are interested in teaching for Hidden River Arts, please also contact us.
Hidden River Writers holds classes and workshops in the Philadelphia area. We will also travel to anywhere you choose to invite us, to offer weekday or weekend workshops, or residencies. Our Founding Director, Debra Leigh Scott, has over 20 years experience with creative writing workshops and residencies. She has worked with both the PA and NJ Councils of the Arts, with young writers K-12. Her university teaching includes classes in creative writing and playwrighting. Our outreach programs include work with youth and adults; and we are always eager to work with under-served and special needs populations. (In Person classes currently remain suspended due to the COVID uncertainties.)
Our 6-week fiction workshop meets at The Pickwick Room, at Cavanaugh’s Headhouse in Society Hill — so named because the pub used to be called The Dickens Inn, and was owned by a descendant of Charles Dickens himself. What could be better than to meet for the purposes of discussing the craft and creativity of fiction, in a space filled with the spirit of Charles Dickens? We are happy to offer this workshop to private groups, either in-person or virtually. For additional information, please contact us at [email protected].
We continue to offer our “Visual/Spatial Storytelling” program to schools and other organizations. The program can be adapted for varying age groups, from K through adult, and focuses on the relationship between visual experience and narrative. Using works of art, art-making and excursions of observation, we build stories, poems — even scripts – from what we see. For more information about this program, please email or call us. Visual/Spatial Storytelling can be adapted to any budget, to any length of time. We are happy to work with all groups in order to shape this exciting program in a way that best suits their needs and interests.
The experiential workshop, “Writing from the Chakras” can also be brought to organizations and groups who are interested in increasing creativity through yoga, breakthwork and other practices, designed to awaken the body’s own energy centers and unleash the creativity stored within us. This program has been designed by Debra Leigh Scott, who has a dual background, in comparative world religions and in creative writing and literature. She has combined her two areas of passion and expertise in order to bring an entirely unique methodology to artists of all genres. The workshop can be used as a catalyst not only for increased creativity through writing, but through all forms of artistic expression – visual art, music, dance, theatre, or any combination thereof. Please email or call for additional information. This program can be run as an 8-week course – meeting once each week, or as a two-weekend residency course. We are eager to work with all budgets to bring this program to you, so don’t hesitate to call! Debra will also work privately with individuals who are interested in developing an understanding of this methodology.
Our Legacy Memoir workshop is focused on helping writers with stories from their own lives, told for the purpose of “legacy” – for your family, your community, your company.Telling stories of your own life and experience, stories that will enrich the lives of future generations, is so often thought about, and too rarely undertaken. This workshop can also be adapted for private groups and organizations to fit your schedule and budget. It can be a one-day workshop, a longer workshop for further development of the writing, a weekend workshop — anything that fits with your own schedules and interests. Call or email us for further information.
Of course, we are always offering our basic workshops in creative writing – fiction, playwrighting, creative non-fiction, poetry as well as tutoring, private sessions – any way we can help you to become a stronger writer, we are eager to do!
We plan to create updated online versions of our workshops which are scheduled to launch in mid-2022. Please stay tuned here and at our blog for updates on the launch of this newest platform.
